RIO POLICE: WELCOME TO HELL

Unfortunately, the title of this article is depressingly accurate. Law enforcement and firefighters in Rio de Janeiro are claiming that the government has not paid them in months, and as such, they are unable to carry out their duties as keepers of peace. Several state officers waited outside the entrance/exit to Rio’s main airport, holding up signs of protest. One of the more poignant ones read: “Welcome to Hell”. However, it’s not just the police that are growing frustrated with the situation; the people of Rio have also been losing patience. Many claim there has been a rise in police brutality leading up to the games, alleging that the government has told law enforcement to keep the people calm through forceful methods so that those visiting cannot see the chaos that reverberates throughout the city.
