DEM. SENATOR FILIBUSTERS FOR GUN CONTROL
After the Orlando shootings, gun control has once again become the forefront of a nation’s policy shopping list. As such, Congress has been fighting over what kind of legislation to push. A Democratic Senator, Senator Chris Murphy has been in a 14 hour filibuster in order to garner votes on a piece of gun legislation. Normally, filibusters are unsuccessful, as was the case with Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz in 2015 and 2013, respectively. The two senators’ filibusters helped launch presidential campaigns, but were unsuccessful in gaining any concessions. Murphy’s filibuster, on the other hand, resulted in vote promises on two separate measures.
