TONY AWARDS: THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Neil Postman once wrote that we “amuse ourselves to death”. While Postman was referring more directly to our tendency to be lethargic in the face of productivity, he was also referring to the age old adage: “The show must go on”. After 9/11, the Emmy’s continued. After the Orlando shootings on Sunday, the Tony’s went on, remembering the victims and meeting with “a hideous dose of reality”. Lin Manuel Miranda, composer of the original score of ‘Hamilton’ composed a sonnet as his acceptance speech, getting tearful as he referenced “senseless acts of tragedy”.
